Siding, soffit, fascia, exterior trim, stucco, gutters, downspouts and exterior repairs.
Exterior improvements protect the building envelope while shaping the appearance of the home. Falis Construction works on siding, soffit, fascia, exterior trim, stucco, gutters, downspouts, exterior painting and related repair scopes where offered.
Projects can be completed as focused exterior improvements or as part of a larger renovation.
The condition of the sheathing and weather-resistive barrier behind the siding affects the scope. Some conditions are only visible once existing siding is removed, so we review what can be seen and explain how findings would be handled.
Windows, doors and other openings need proper flashing and integration with the weather-resistive barrier, and that detailing is planned as part of the siding scope.
Siding materials differ in cost, maintenance and how they perform through Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles. Material choice and the wall’s exposure are reviewed when the scope is defined.
Gutters, downspouts, trim and grading all affect how water moves away from the house, so we look at how the exterior sheds water when reviewing the project.
Sometimes it is physically possible and it is usually a poor idea. Covering existing siding hides whatever condition the sheathing and weather barrier are in, adds thickness that complicates flashing at openings, and forfeits the one opportunity to correct problems in the wall assembly. We would generally recommend removal.
There is no single answer, but the climate rewards materials that tolerate freeze-thaw and moisture well and that are detailed correctly at joints and openings. Fibre cement, quality vinyl and engineered wood all perform here when installed properly. Installation detail matters more to longevity than the choice between good materials.
Directly, and it is the most under-appreciated connection in residential construction. A roof sheds a very large volume of water, and if gutters discharge it beside the foundation the soil there stays saturated. That is a leading cause of basement moisture. Extending discharge well away from the house is one of the cheapest preventative measures available.
Stucco is within our exterior scope. It is worth noting that stucco assemblies are less forgiving of poor flashing detail than lap siding, because water that gets behind stucco has fewer paths to drain and dry — so the detail work at openings and transitions matters even more.
Some materials and some conditions allow it; others genuinely do not. Cold affects handling and fastening for several siding products, and opening up a wall in deep winter creates its own complications. Where a project can be scheduled into a suitable season, the result is generally better.
